Set in the Philippines at the conclusion of World War II, “In My Mother’s Skin” follows the narrative of Tala, a 14-year-old daughter of a textile merchant who resides in a war-ravaged colonial house with her ailing mother Ligaya and younger brother Bayani. When Tala’s father mysteriously departs once more to negotiate for his family’s freedom with the Japanese, the family finds themselves isolated in their forest mansion. As Ligaya’s health deteriorates rapidly, Tala embarks on a quest to find a mysterious fairy who has promised to protect her. The fairy gives Tala a magical insect to cure her mother, initially providing relief but ultimately leading to disastrous consequences that force Tala into a heart-wrenching decision.
