MAKATI, PHILIPPINES – My parents are huge fans of Indian food and back in the province, I never understood why as the usual restaurant they get it from always had this too strong taste that I believed was too strong for my taste buds – I felt dizzy with the spices and flavor so I thought all Indian and/or North-Eastern food tasted the same.
However, when I was asked to try Indian food in Makati, I was just stunned with how much I was so wrong with everything that I thought.
Biryani, Samosas, and the internet-famous Pani Puri are just exquisite at Queens at Bollywood, a girl-power and woman-empowered Indian restaurant in Makati.
The Indian food here is definitely authentic as its owner, Ms. Chandni Agrawal is full-Indian and took over the business after her mother, Ms. Sima Agrawal. Ms. Chad was definitely welcoming – it felt like I’ve known her for a really long time!
They served us so much food and I definitely have my favorites – favorites that I will absolutely come back for.
Honey Chilli Cauliflower
This is where I learned that Indians prefer all-veggie foods. Other than all the foods served that were mostly out of veggies, this is my favorite.
This appetizer tastes so good as its flavor is both sweet and spicy at the same time. Honestly, if you were to try this without knowing it’s cauliflower, you will think it’s chicken popcorn glazed with flavored sauce. Nope, you’re eating healthy!
It’s the first platter I finished with all the food served!
Samosa
“Of course, we have samosas!” Ms. Chad told me when I asked if there’s samosas during her interview. They have 2 options for their samosas, the non-veggie one and the veggie one.
This is the food that made me know that Queens at Bollywood absolutely serves authentic Indian dishes as the samosas I first tried tasted way different from here.
The flavor is strong and really has a kick – it’s different in such a good way. You can compare its texture and flavor with empanadas or Ilocos Empanadas but with a different filling that’s dashed with Indian spices!
Persian Chicken Biryani
The first biryani I tried back in the province is the dish that made me not like Indian food , I thought it was always too strong with the spices. However, like I mentioned, Queens at Bollywood made me change my opinion about Indian food – specifically this biryani!
It’s flavorful and not too strong – not too spicy either. The rice is ultimately filling and it’s the same as you see on the internet – long rice grains!
Mango Lassi
For my drink, I had something from the Indian cuisine and we were introduced Lassi. It’s a drink that’s made with yoghurt and tastes different from a usual shake drink.
I kid you not when I say that I had more than 2 orders of this!
Especially that I know I usually have an upset stomach when I eat too many, this helped me a lot with my digestion. Their lassi has so many fruit flavors to choose from too!
Kulfi and Cassata Ice Cream
I definitely needed to top off the overwhelmingly full table of food with something sweet and refreshing. Then, I checked their menu and asked, “What’s kulfi?” as I’m kind of familiar with it seeing it on Tiktok but I never understood what exactly is it.
It’s like ice cream but not ice cream – the texture is different from what we were used to with ice cream. It’s not too sweet as well and I believe it’s something way more healthy than the average ice cream.
Cassata ice cream looks like Neapolitan ice cream but it has a different kick and had so much add-ons such as different tiny bits of fruits!
