J. Amado Araneta Foundation (JAAF) has joined forces with Bayanihang Marikenyo at Marikenya and the UP Artist Circle to establish a creative haven for local artists, allowing them to freely express their thoughts through art. This collaboration has given birth to the remarkable “Bayanihan sa Bayan Hulmahan” exhibit, currently showcased at the Gateway Gallery.
The exhibit showcases a vibrant collection of 100 artworks painted on discarded wooden shoe molds that would have otherwise been used as firewood or thrown away by shoemakers in Marikina during the pandemic. Each artwork delves into critical social issues, shedding light on topics such as the plight of farmers, environmental concerns, political prisoners, feminist struggles, and more.
The shoe molds were transformed into stunning pieces of art by a talented group of artists, including Kevin Eric Raymundo (known as Tarantadong Kalbo), Cartoonist Zach, Richard Tercio, Fe Toledo, Dagitab, Glenda Carlota and her daughter Dawn Carlota from JAAF, inmates from Manila City Jail, as well as children from Child Hope Philippines.
In addition to promoting local craftsmanship, the exhibit also serves as a source of livelihood for numerous families across various Marikina communities. Project Hulmahan, which purchased the shoe molds from the shoemakers, distributed them to the artists. The artists have the option to sell their artwork, with the proceeds going to specific beneficiaries.
The creatively designed shoe molds are currently being displayed at various establishments throughout the country during the summer, with plans to showcase them in other parts of the world in the coming months.
The “Bayanihan sa Bayan Hulmahan” exhibit is open to the public free of charge at the Gateway Gallery in Araneta City from April 28 to May 30, 2023. It provides a remarkable opportunity for visitors to immerse themselves in the thought-provoking world of art while supporting local communities and artists.
