“Wag Ka Nang Umiyak” is a song written and composed by Ebe Dancel when he was still in Sugarfree released in the album Tala-Arawan in 2006 which became a gold record by 2009.
In an interview for his first digital concert entitled “Atin Ang Gabi” with One Music Ph, Ebe Dancel recalls how “Wag Ka Nang Umiyak” came to be.
“I had a friend who’s really iyakin. Iyakin lang talaga siya. And syempre yung tendency mo pag may kaibigan kang umiiyak… what do you say? O wag kang umiyak. So I wrote that song as a reminder that things do get better,” Ebe said.
As far as Ebe’s song writing prowess is concern, it is not surprising that the song’s message have transcended to more than just a song about being there for a friend. Now it is probably one of the most popular teleserye songs ever with a revival from Gary V. for FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano. This leads to many people wondering about Ebe’s reaction to the song’s popularity which has even become an object for viral videos plugged into movies, series, gifs, as its hilarious background music.
“Kasi that time di ako nanonood ng tv. So may isang eksena sa Star Wars, biglang may nagsloslowmo, patutugtugin nila yun… Kung minsan Avengers… papatugtugin nila yun. So finally I called a friend, sabi ko, I don’t understand what’s going on… Nung nagets ko, natawa ako,” he recalls.
“The best compliment that a musician can ever receive is for someone to take his or her song and make it their own,” Ebe said. “I have no complaints because the way to interpret the song is a very subjective experience.”
“Una kasi, I can’t get over the fact na si Gary V. [is the one] who sang that song. That guy is my hero. He is a mentor in music and in life. I consider him a dear friend. I even had a long talk with Tita Angeli. Kasi she called me to thank me for song eh, and I said no no no! Thank you!” Ebe said.
Just recently, Gary V. has undergone an open heart surgery and is on the way to recovery.
On May 13, 2018 Sunday at 7pm Ebe Dancel will have his first digital concert entitled “Atin Ang Gabi” which will be streamed worldwide on ABS-CBN’s music portal One Music PH. It will also feature guests such as Barbie Almalbis, Ben&Ben and the Manila String Machine. The show will be opened by One Music artist Unit 406.
