Tanghalang Molave (TM), the official theater organization of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) Department of Performing Arts, proudly presents Malou Jacob’s Juan Tamban as its major production this March 2025.

For years, TM has been committed to staging Filipino plays—both classical and contemporary—that reclaim and amplify Filipino narratives through compelling, student-led productions. This season, TM embraces the theme “Piglas”, symbolizing the act of breaking free from societal, political, and personal constraints. Rooted in the nation’s history, “Piglas” represents the Filipino spirit of resistance and resilience, echoing our collective struggles against oppression and social injustices.

As part of this powerful season, TM brings to life Juan Tamban, one of the most significant works in contemporary Philippine theater. Originally staged by the PETA Kalinangan Ensemble in 1979, the play won Second Prize in the Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature.
A Powerful Story of Struggle and Survival
Juan Tamban follows the story of a boy named Juan Tamban, who makes headlines for eating cockroaches and lizards to gain attention. Marina Torres, a graduate student and social worker, takes on his case as part of her master’s thesis, leading her to a deeper understanding of Juan’s harsh reality—his family’s struggles, his community’s conditions, and the broader societal issues that shape his existence.
