Shopee Alerts Public on Rising Task and Prize Scams

Shopee, Southeast Asia and Taiwan’s leading e-commerce platform, is warning the public about the increasing prevalence of task and prize scams, as fraudsters use more sophisticated tactics to target individuals via SMS and messaging apps.

How These Scams Work

Two of the most common schemes involve fake job offers and fraudulent prize claims:

  • Task Scams: Scammers impersonate Shopee Mall representatives or Shopee’s HR Recruitment Team, offering fake part-time or full-time jobs. They start with simple tasks to gain trust before demanding monetary transfers, falsely promising high financial returns.
  • Prize Scams: Fraudsters send messages with malicious links, tricking users into claiming fake rewards from supposed Shopee contests. Once victims enter personal details, scammers steal sensitive information—such as names, addresses, and bank details—which can lead to financial fraud.

Staying Safe Online

Shopee remains committed to ensuring a secure shopping experience and urges users to stay vigilant by following these key safety measures:

  • Job Offers: Shopee never asks for money in exchange for employment. Official job postings are only available on the Shopee Careers page.
  • Prize Claims: Shopee does not send links via SMS or messaging apps for prize redemption. Official contest winners are announced only within the Shopee app or on its verified pages.
  • Protect Personal Information: Never share confidential details—such as PINs, OTPs, or passwords—with unknown senders.
  • Use the Shopee App for Transactions: Keeping all transactions within the Shopee app ensures secure payments, order tracking, and buyer protection.

Reporting Fraudulent Activity

Users who encounter scams involving Shopee’s name should report them by submitting screenshots and contact details to the Shopee Cares Facebook Page or Shopee Customer Service via the Shopee app. For more scam prevention tips, visit the Shop Safe with Shopee page or search “Shop Safe” in the Shopee app.
