Isabela, the second-largest province in the Philippines, is a vital agricultural hub known as the “Rice Granary of the North.” It plays a key role in food production, cultivating rice, corn, vegetables, and fruits while supporting a thriving poultry and livestock industry. This agricultural abundance is deeply rooted in the province’s culture and is celebrated through festivals like the highly anticipated Makam Ken Mainum competition.

Makam Ken Mainum, which means “to eat and drink” in Ilocano, goes beyond a cooking contest—it is a platform for preserving and promoting Isabela’s traditional cuisine. Established a decade ago by Mrs. Mary Ann Dy, wife of Vice Governor Faustino Dy, the event gained national recognition when featured in a popular cooking show during the province’s Bambanti Festival.

This year, 22 participants from various municipalities competed in two categories: Makan (food) and Mainum (drink). Contestants in the Makan category created dishes using mystery ingredients—squash and pinilisa rice—while the Mainum category highlighted cacao, one of Isabela’s prized agricultural products.

Participants crafted innovative dishes, blending traditional Filipino flavors with modern twists. The competition venue buzzed with the aroma of sizzling ingredients and freshly brewed cacao, heightening anticipation among the judges, a panel of esteemed chefs, food critics, and public officials.
Tumauini Municipality won the Makan category with a creative dish that showcased the natural sweetness of squash and the delicate texture of pinilisa rice. Luna Municipality triumphed in the Mainum category with a refreshing cacao-based beverage that perfectly balanced flavor and presentation.
