The experimental pop record offers a bold, introspective journey into healing, resilience, and self-discovery
Acclaimed singer-songwriter Barbie Almalbis embarks on an exciting new chapter in her storied career with the release of her fifth studio album, Not That Girl. Now streaming on all major platforms, the album delivers a fresh, daring sound while weaving deeply personal reflections into its sonic tapestry.
Breaking away from the themes of her earlier works, Not That Girl delves into emotional healing, resilience, and the complexities of mental health. Almalbis approaches these topics with striking honesty and vulnerability, crafting a collection of songs that resonate as both an artistic evolution and a courageous narrative of her own experiences.
“This album was written during one of the most challenging periods of my life, yet it holds a special place in my heart,” shares Almalbis. “It’s about holding on to faith through struggles, discovering hope in surrender, and cherishing the joy found in love and friendship. While I’ve often written about heartbreak and unrequited love, these songs focus more on personal growth and emotional healing.”
The introspective nature of Not That Girl allows listeners a rare glimpse into Almalbis’ inner world. For her, songwriting became both a means of processing emotions and a source of comfort during difficult times.
“Writing these songs felt natural, almost essential,” Almalbis reflects. “It was my way of working through my struggles and redirecting my focus toward hope. The process itself has been healing, helping me live out the themes I wrote about.”
Almalbis recently shared an encouraging message on Instagram, emphasizing how music transformed her pain into something meaningful. “In the depths of my pain, my friends urged me to write, and so I did. The songs poured out effortlessly, reminding me of my teenage years when writing was my way of understanding overwhelming emotions. It felt like reconnecting with a long-lost part of myself.”
Musically, Not That Girl showcases a bold shift in Almalbis’ sound. Collaborating with producer Nick Lazaro, she explores new creative territory, blending raw and experimental elements that elevate her signature style.
“Working with Nick was an eye-opening experience,” Almalbis says. “He pushed the music and my performance to places I’d always dreamed of but didn’t know how to reach. His unfiltered approach to recording has been refreshing and transformative, lessons I’m excited to carry over into our live performances.”
To celebrate the release, Almalbis will host an intimate album launch at Sari-Sari Cocktails in Makati City. Fans can look forward to an extended live set featuring favorites and tracks from Not That Girl, with special performances by Kai del Rio, .bird, Twin Lobster, and Johnoy Danao.
Almalbis is also set to perform the album live internationally at the Music Lane Festival in Okinawa, Japan, on Sunday, January 19, 2025.
