Empowering a Million: Pure Bayanihan’s Quest to End Poverty

How a non-profit organization embodies ‘bayanihan’ one sustainable livelihood at a time

Pure Bayanihan, a US-registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, proudly announces the official launch of its nationwide initiative designed to alleviate poverty in the Philippines through sustainable livelihood programs. The organization aims to empower over a million individuals, addressing the systemic challenges that keep many Filipinos in poverty.

While the national poverty rate has declined from 18.1% in 2021 to 15.5%, over 17.5 million Filipinos still live below the poverty line, facing limited access to quality education and stable employment—particularly in rural areas. These barriers have prevented many from achieving long-term economic stability.

Adding to these challenges, the Philippines remains highly vulnerable to natural disasters, such as Typhoon Kristine and other calamities, due to its location in the typhoon belt and Pacific Ring of Fire. These recurring events have tested the resilience of communities across the nation. However, they have also highlighted the enduring Filipino spirit of “Bayanihan”—a tradition of collaboration and mutual support that has driven efforts like community pantries, donation drives, and disaster relief initiatives.

Inspired by this spirit, Pure Bayanihan has made it its mission to dismantle systemic barriers through skills training, entrepreneurial opportunities, and access to essential livelihood support. By fostering a culture of empowerment and resilience, the organization seeks to enable communities to rise above poverty and create sustainable futures.

“The fact is that some Filipinos are just one storm away from having nothing; they might also be one hand up away from getting out of nothing,” said Barry Harrigan, Chairman of Pure Bayanihan. “With a little help, Filipinos can recover from hardships and lift themselves up. Our effort is about finding the best ways to give them that ‘hand up’ and put them on the path to stability. That’s really what Pure Bayanihan is all about.”

Pure Bayanihan’s innovative approach combines the power of community-driven solutions with targeted livelihood programs, offering renewed hope for a brighter and more sustainable future for Filipinos.

A group of single mothers and widows in Diffun, Quirino underwent food processing skills training conducted by Pure Bayanihan. These newly acquired skills provide them with opportunities to generate income, support their families, and gain valuable knowledge for a sustainable future.

Since its founding, Pure Bayanihan has created a meaningful impact across the Philippines, transforming the lives of individuals and families in need. To date, the organization has positively affected 50 communities, 1,898 families, and 9,490 individuals, delivering hope and sustainable opportunities for those living in poverty.

Among its most notable initiatives is a program designed to empower widows and single mothers, equipping them with essential skills and training to establish small businesses. By fostering entrepreneurship and financial independence, this initiative not only uplifts these women but also strengthens the communities they serve, paving the way for a brighter and more stable future.

Through programs like these, Pure Bayanihan continues to champion its mission of alleviating poverty and driving sustainable change, one community at a time.

Rhenia is one of the beneficiaries of Pure Bayanihan in BASECO, Manila, where she received seed capital to kickstart her entrepreneurial journey in plastic trading. Through this initiative, she has been empowered to create a sustainable source of income, helping her and her community break the cycle of poverty.

Pure Bayanihan is addressing critical social and environmental challenges through innovative initiatives that uplift communities and protect the planet.

In Baseco, Manila, the organization is transforming waste into valuable products, tackling both poverty and pollution. By empowering residents to repurpose discarded materials, they are creating livelihood opportunities while reducing environmental waste.

In Iloilo, Pure Bayanihan is supporting local Kangkong farmers, helping them enhance their income and productivity. This initiative not only improves the farmers’ livelihoods but also strengthens regional food security, contributing to a more sustainable agricultural sector.

Through these targeted programs, Pure Bayanihan demonstrates its commitment to creating long-term solutions that benefit both people and the environment.

They received a motorized tricycle for easier transportation to the market and alternative livelihood support from Pure Bayanihan, equipping them to boost their income and sustain their community.

Building on its successes, Pure Bayanihan is poised to extend its reach and amplify its positive impact in the coming years. To achieve this, the organization is actively forging partnerships with local governments, corporations, and international organizations, ensuring a collaborative approach to poverty alleviation.

As part of its efforts to enhance visibility and outreach, Pure Bayanihan has teamed up with PRecious Communications Philippines, an award-winning multi-market integrated communications agency, to drive awareness and engagement.
