After receiving widespread acclaim during its world premiere at the Aliw Theater, Ballet Manila is set to restage the beloved Filipino epic poem-turned-ballet, Florante at Laura. This highly anticipated production will run from November 22 to 24, 2024, at the Hyundai Hall, Areté, Ateneo de Manila University, Quezon City.
Adapted from the 1838 masterpiece by Francisco “Balagtas” Baltasar, Florante at Laura narrates the tale of Florante, the Duke of Albania, as he overcomes betrayal, captivity, and heartbreak. With the help of Aladin, a Moorish warrior, Florante escapes his captors, defeats his nemesis Adolfo, and reunites with his love, Laura.
Under the artistic direction of Lisa Macuja Elizalde, Ballet Manila has brought together a world-class creative team to reimagine this iconic Filipino story.
“Florante at Laura is more than a performance; it is a cultural celebration of our rich literary heritage,” said Macuja Elizalde. “This production honors the timeless work of Francisco Baltasar while showcasing the exceptional talents of our dancers, choreographers, and creative team.”
The production features an original score by National Artist for Music Ryan Cayabyab, performed by the Orchestra of the Filipino Youth under the baton of Maestro Toma Cayabyab. Combining Cayabyab’s sweeping compositions with mesmerizing choreography, the performance promises an unforgettable artistic experience.
“This full-length composition is one of my legacy pieces—my gift to the Filipino people,” Cayabyab shared. “I want Ballet Manila to share it with generations to come.”
The creative team includes choreographers Gerardo Francisco Jr. and Martin Lawrance, Balagtas expert Dr. Michael Coroza as libretto consultant, award-winning set designer Mio Infante, lighting director John Batalla, and costume designers Make It Happen.
