A Cinematic Journey Through Spanish Storytelling
🎬 March 7 | El olivo (The Olive Tree) | UPFI Film Center, UP Diliman | 2:00 PM
Kicking off the series is El olivo (The Olive Tree) by Icíar Bollaín, a heartfelt drama about Alma, a young woman determined to reclaim an ancient olive tree sold against her grandfather’s will. As her grandfather—who hasn’t spoken in years—begins refusing food, Alma embarks on an emotional journey to bring the tree back, believing it holds the key to restoring his spirit.

🎬 March 13 | 15 Years and 1 Day | Instituto Cervantes, Intramuros | 2:00 PM
Directed by Gracia Querejeta, 15 Years and 1 Day delves into the turbulent relationship between Jon, a rebellious teenager, and Max, his disciplined grandfather. When Jon is expelled from school, his mother sends him to live with Max, hoping he will set the boy on the right path. Through their struggles, they find an unexpected bond that reshapes their understanding of family and second chances.

🎬 March 20 | Yuli | Instituto Cervantes, Intramuros | 2:00 PM
The third film in the lineup is Yuli, another masterful work by Icíar Bollaín. This biographical drama follows the life of Cuban ballet star Carlos Acosta, who plays himself in the film. From his humble beginnings in Havana to becoming the first black dancer to perform Romeo at the Royal Ballet in London, the film captures his incredible journey of defiance, perseverance, and artistry. After the screening, audiences will have the opportunity to join a Spanish-language discussion with Instituto Cervantes staff.

🎬 March 27 | Cerdita (Piggy) | Instituto Cervantes, Intramuros | 2:00 PM
Closing the series is the gripping thriller Cerdita (Piggy) by Carlota Pereda. Set in a small Spanish town, the film follows Sara, a teenager subjected to relentless fatphobic bullying. When a mysterious stranger abducts her tormentors, Sara is faced with a chilling dilemma: Should she save them or protect the man who freed her from their cruelty? This psychological drama explores themes of justice, vengeance, and self-empowerment.
