Repertory Philippines opened its current season with an adaptation of an international critically acclaimed stage play and Wazzup.PH was there on its gala night.
We meet Vera Joseph at 3am in her New York apartment, woken up by her 21-year-old grandson Leo Joseph-Connell who just came from a cross-country biking trip. A major loss in his life makes him angry and wounded. A few days turned into a month and staying with his grandmother heals him while coming into sense of family and social responsibility.
This is Jeff Flores’ first lead role in a non-musical as Leo while theater veteran Ms. Baby Barredo plays the nonagenarian Vera. Caisa Borromeo and Cara Barredo also joins the cast as Leo’s girlfriend Bec and the funny Chinese girl Amanda, respectively.
In its various runs across America, 4,000 MILES has received praise for its story. It has been heralded as the Best New Play by the Obie Awards in 2012 and was a finalist for the prestigious Pulitzer Prize. Amy Herzog was also recognized as an outstanding playwright by the New York Times.
The slice-of-life production is loyal to the original script and such. Renowned theater actor Bart Guingona takes the directorial chair and adds his our flair with the music he chose in between scenes, from different Seattle artists.
