Philippine Ballet Theatre Presents: The Merry Widow

A Season Opener of Romance, Intrigue, and Elegance

For its highly anticipated first season production, the Philippine Ballet Theatre (PBT) proudly presents The Merry Widow—a dazzling tale of tangled relationships, near-misses, and passionate love. Originally premiered as an operetta by Franz Lehár in Vienna in 1905, this beloved classic has inspired countless ballet adaptations across the globe. Now, set against the romantic backdrop of Paris, The Merry Widow explores themes of love, wealth, and deception, making it a captivating experience for audiences of all ages.

A Ballet Masterpiece for the Filipino Audience

Under the artistic direction of Ronilo Jaynario, The Merry Widow takes on new life through PBT’s signature blend of classical ballet, character dance, theatrical acting, and expressive mime. Franz Lehár’s timeless melodies transport audiences into a world of wit, charm, and elegance, ensuring that every performance is a feast for both the eyes and the heart.

Honoring PBT’s Rich Legacy

This production holds special significance for PBT as it pays homage to the company’s history. Few may know that The Merry Widow was one of the very first ballets performed by PBT. Originally choreographed by Julie Borromeo, it premiered in 1987, making a lasting impact and solidifying PBT’s reputation for excellence and innovation.

Now, nearly four decades later, this fifth restaging reaffirms the company’s commitment to preserving and elevating the art of ballet. The production is lovingly dedicated to PBT’s founding members: Julie Borromeo, Felicitas Radaic, Steve Villaruz, Gener Caringal, Eddie Elejar, Leonor Orosa-Goquingco, Vella Damian, Sony Lopez-Gonzales, and the late Tony Fabella, Eric Cruz, and Inday Gaston-Mañosa. Their vision continues to inspire PBT as the National Performing Arts Company for ballet and contemporary dance in the Philippines.
