Fire and Ice LIVE!: “Choosing” Returns

Fire and Ice LIVE!, a premier Filipino production company, proudly announces the highly anticipated limited rerun of “Choosing (A Stage Play).” Following its critically acclaimed debut in 2024, this compelling two-person drama—written by Liza Diño-Seguerra—returns to the stage from June 6 to 15, 2025, at the Doreen Black Box Theater, Areté, Ateneo de Manila University.

A Story of Love, Identity, and Choices

“Choosing” is an intimate and genre-defying theatrical experience inspired by the real-life journeys of its lead performers, a married couple both on and offstage. The play follows Stella, a cisgender woman, and Mitch, a transgender man, as they navigate pivotal moments in their lives—from self-discovery and love to the struggles they have overcome together. Through raw monologues and heartfelt dialogues, the story explores gender identity, love, trauma, healing, and the power of choice in shaping one’s destiny.

“We are passionate about showcasing world-class Filipino productions and keeping our performing arts scene thriving,” shares Liza Diño-Seguerra, co-founder of Fire and Ice LIVE! and playwright of “Choosing.” “This play is deeply personal yet universally resonant, telling a story that challenges and inspires.”

A Critically Acclaimed Production

Since its debut, “Choosing” has received widespread acclaim from critics and theatergoers alike. The production was praised for its courageous storytelling, emotional depth, and compelling performances, with Dr. Anton Juan’s direction creating an intimate atmosphere that drew audiences into the characters’ deeply personal struggles.

Tatler Philippines hailed the play as “a beautiful addition to queer literature,” while Moy Ortiz of The Company described it as “emotionally raw, messy, and complex.” Esteemed actress Sheila Francisco remarked, “It may well be the most significant piece of theater you’ll experience this year.”

What’s New for the 2025 Rerun?

Building on the success of its first run, the 2025 rerun promises subtle enhancements while preserving its deeply affecting narrative. Returning director Dr. Anton Juan ensures the play’s emotional depth and authenticity remain intact, while celebrated composer Vincent A. De Jesus once again provides an evocative musical score that elevates the storytelling.

Set in an intimate Black Box theater, the staging will further immerse audiences in Stella and Mitch’s world. Ice Seguerra, who stars as Mitch and co-produces the play, has also contributed additional monologues for this run, enriching the experience for both new and returning viewers.

“This rerun is our way of responding to the overwhelming support for ‘Choosing,’” shares Ice Seguerra. “The conversations that started after our first staging continued long after the final curtain call. We knew we had to bring it back—for those who missed it and for those who want to experience it again with fresh eyes.”

The 2025 run coincides with Pride Month, making it a timely celebration of LGBTQ+ stories, self-discovery, and acceptance. Through this production, Fire and Ice LIVE! reaffirms its commitment to bringing relevant and thought-provoking Filipino theater to the forefront.
