Filipino Tourism Boom: Hong Kong Greets 1 Millionth Visitor

Southeast Asia Leads Tourism Recovery with the Philippines as the #1 Market

On November 29, Hong Kong achieved a historic milestone, welcoming its millionth visitor from the Philippines this year. This remarkable moment underscores the city’s resurgence as a premier travel destination in Southeast Asia.

Miguel Linao, his wife Ana, and their three children received an unforgettable welcome upon arriving at Hong Kong International Airport. Greeted by the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) team, they were celebrated as the one-millionth Filipino visitors of 2024—a milestone that eclipses the 930,000 arrivals recorded by the same time in 2018.

“This isn’t our first trip to Hong Kong, but we never expected anything like this,” Linao shared. “We’re here to support our daughter in a gymnastics competition and, of course, to enjoy the sights. Hong Kong is always a quick and exciting getaway for us, just two and a half hours from home. We love the food, the theme parks, and the overall energy of the city. We all look forward to this trip,” he added.

This milestone reflects Hong Kong’s enduring appeal to Filipino travelers, offering a vibrant mix of attractions and experiences that keep visitors coming back year after year.

Southeast Asia’s Leading Tourism Market: The Philippines

Visitor numbers from Southeast Asia have surged since Hong Kong fully reopened to international travelers, with the Philippines emerging as a pivotal market in the city’s tourism recovery. Between January and October 2024, Filipino visitors accounted for 920,000 of the 2.3 million arrivals from Southeast Asia—an impressive 127% recovery compared to pre-pandemic figures. Across the region, visitor numbers have rebounded to approximately 95%, solidifying Southeast Asia as Hong Kong’s fastest-recovering tourism market.

HKTB Executive Director Dane Cheng expressed optimism about the region’s resurgence. “The growth in international visitor arrivals during the first 10 months of 2024 has been highly encouraging, particularly from Southeast Asia. We’re delighted that Hong Kong has solidified its position as the top travel destination for Filipino travelers. With the festive season approaching, we are ramping up promotions for the Hong Kong WinterFest to invite more visitors to experience the city’s vibrant holiday celebrations.”

Why Filipinos Love Hong Kong

For Filipino travelers, Hong Kong strikes the perfect balance between adventure and convenience. According to HKTB data, Southeast Asian visitors are young, dynamic, and typically stay for an average of 3.4 nights, spending about HK$7,100 per trip. Favorite activities include exploring iconic theme parks, shopping at bustling markets like Temple Street and Ladies’ Market, and visiting cultural landmarks such as the Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade, the Avenue of Stars, and the Clock Tower.

Upcoming attractions are poised to attract even more Filipino visitors:

  • Coldplay Live at Kai Tak Sports Park
In January 2025, Coldplay’s Music of the Spheres World Tour will light up the newly opened Kai Tak Sports Park. With a capacity for 50,000 fans, the concert promises an unforgettable night under a sky full of stars.
  • Meet the Panda Twins at Ocean Park
February 2025 will mark the debut of Ocean Park’s twin panda cubs, a heartwarming event that will draw families and animal enthusiasts alike.
