The former Legazpi Airport in Albay is set to become a lively haven for airborne enthusiasts. “A Weekend of Everything that Flies,” the country’s premier airshow event usually held in Clark, Pampanga, will make its inaugural appearance in the Bicol region. Against the stunning backdrop of the iconic Mayon Volcano, attendees are in for an awe-inspiring experience.
Initiated by Ako Bicol party-list representative, Cong. Zaldy Co, the event takes inspiration from renowned hot air balloon festivals worldwide, particularly those in Clark, Pampanga, and the daily flights of Cappadocia, Turkey. Co envisions this international spectacle, featuring foreign pilots and participants, as a catalyst for rejuvenating tourism throughout Albay and the broader Bicol region.
“In Cappadocia, Turkey, we were captivated by the sight of hot air balloons drifting over breathtaking landscapes. Now, picture these colorful balloons set against the backdrop of the majestic Mayon Volcano,” Co expressed. “This event holds the promise of drawing spectators, creating tourism-related jobs, boosting sales of local products, and revitalizing our regional economy.”
Attendees can look forward to an enchanting display of hot air balloons, featuring whimsical shapes such as Brazil’s Bidu, the UK’s Bella and Buster (both canine characters), the Party Balloon from the USA, the UK’s Dyno (a dinosaur), and Belgium’s Princess Nelly (an elephant), among others. Furthermore, the Global Stars aerobatic team will mesmerize spectators with exhilarating aircraft stunts, enhanced by daytime smoke trails and nighttime pyrotechnics.
The celebrations persist with mesmerizing drone light shows, dazzling fireworks displays, and the captivating Night Glow, where hot air balloons light up the night sky to synchronized music. Throughout the event, guests can immerse themselves in exhibitions showcasing paramotors, kites, FPV drones, ultralight planes, and even car drifters, all against the picturesque backdrop of the runway.
Immerse yourself in Bicol’s renowned local cuisine and products showcased at the “Fly Market” and food booths scattered throughout the venue. While entry to the event is free, those interested in experiencing hot air balloon flights, tethered rides, tandem skydiving, or tandem paragliding are encouraged to secure tickets online in advance, as slots are limited.
Organized by the Philippine International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta (PIHABF), famous for its annual airshow in Clark, Pampanga, and New Clark City, Tarlac, the event upholds a tradition spanning nearly three decades. Its fundamental goals remain unwavering: to spark aviation interest among the youth, instill discipline in aspiring pilots, and nurture a sense of community volunteerism.
