Farm Tourism: A Transformative Force, Says DOT

The Department of Tourism (DOT), led by Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco, reinforced its dedication to sustainable development and inclusive economic growth through farm tourism at the 8th Philippine International Farm Tourism Conference (PIFTC). Held on February 25 at the KCC Mall in General Santos City, the event highlighted the region’s potential as a hub for innovative and sustainable farm tourism.

Organized by the International School of Sustainable Tourism (ISST) in partnership with the DOT, the three-day conference brought together experts, policymakers, farmers, and tourism stakeholders to share best practices and success stories in bio-diversified farming and rural development.

Farm Tourism: A Catalyst for Growth

In her keynote address, Secretary Frasco emphasized the transformative power of farm tourism in driving rural development, food security, and cultural preservation.

“Farm tourism is more than just agricultural production—it is a celebration of our culture, history, and sustainability. It fosters innovation, empowers communities, and opens new doors for prosperity,” she said.

She also reaffirmed the government’s commitment, under President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s leadership, to integrating farm tourism into the National Tourism Development Plan through initiatives that support local communities and promote sustainable agriculture.

Spotlighting Innovation & Collaboration

With the theme “Innovations in Farm Tourism: Cultivating Growth and Sustainability,” the conference showcased emerging farm tourism industries, including General Santos City’s booming grape farming sector.

Secretary Frasco stressed the need for collaboration among government agencies, local governments, and private stakeholders to ensure the long-term sustainability and growth of farm tourism.

“By embracing our agricultural heritage and harnessing new opportunities in farm tourism, we create a future where both agriculture and tourism thrive—bringing prosperity to rural communities for generations to come,” she added.

Passing the Torch: Baguio City Named Next Host

A key moment in the event was the symbolic turnover of hosting duties from General Santos City to Baguio City, marking the next phase of the PIFTC’s journey.

Secretary Frasco, alongside ISST Chairperson and former DOT Secretary Mina Gabor and General Santos Councilor Virgie Tiongson Llido, led the ceremonial handover, reinforcing the continuity and importance of farm tourism in the Philippines.

With farm tourism gaining momentum, the DOT remains steadfast in positioning the sector as a vital pillar of the country’s tourism strategy, ensuring that agriculture and tourism work hand in hand to build a sustainable and prosperous future.
